Sniff Walks and Nose Work
Harness your dog's most powerful sense for low-cost, high-impact enrichment.
The Power of the Nose
Dogs experience the world primarily through smell. Their olfactory system is between 10,000 and 100,000 times more sensitive than ours. A 20-minute sniff walk can be more mentally tiring for a dog than a 40-minute jog, because processing all that scent information is genuinely hard cognitive work.
Yet many owners rush their dogs through walks, pulling them away from interesting smells and focusing purely on physical exercise. A simple mindset shift — letting your dog lead with their nose — transforms an ordinary walk into a rich enrichment experience at zero extra cost.
Sniff walks are especially valuable for:
- Senior dogs who can no longer handle long physical walks
- Reactive dogs who need to decompress
- Anxious dogs who benefit from calming nose-down behaviour
- Puppies learning about their environment
- Dogs recovering from surgery or injury (with vet approval)
How to Do a Sniff Walk
A sniff walk is simple: use a longer lead (3-5 metres), let your dog choose the direction, and allow them to stop and sniff as much as they want. You are following them, not the other way around.
Tips for effective sniff walks:
-
Choose a route with varied terrain — grass, dirt, leaf litter, and garden beds offer more interesting scents than footpaths.
-
Avoid busy roads where your dog will be breathing in exhaust fumes rather than natural scents.
-
Let your dog sniff for as long as they want at each spot. If you need to move on, use a gentle “let’s go” cue rather than pulling the lead.
-
You can “seed” the route ahead of time by scattering a few treats in the grass for your dog to discover.
-
Vary your routes regularly. New smells provide new information and more mental stimulation.
On hot Australian summer days or during heavy rain, you can bring nose work indoors. Hide treats around the house and let your dog search for them. Start easy (in plain sight) and gradually make hiding spots more challenging. This is a brilliant rainy-day activity that costs nothing.
