Grief Support and Resources
Finding support, Australian pet loss resources, and coping with the grief of losing a pet.
Your Grief Is Real
The loss of a pet is a profound experience. For many people, a pet is a family member, a daily companion, a source of unconditional love, and a constant presence in their lives. When that presence is gone, the grief can be overwhelming.
Unfortunately, pet loss grief is not always well understood by those who have not experienced it. You may hear comments like “it was just a pet” or “you can always get another one.” These words, even when well-intentioned, can be deeply hurtful and dismissive.
Your grief is valid. Your loss is real. The depth of your pain is a reflection of the depth of your love, and there is no reason to apologise for it.
Grief after pet loss can include:
- Intense sadness and crying
- Difficulty sleeping or eating
- Feeling lost or purposeless — especially if your daily routine revolved around your pet’s care
- Guilt — wondering if you made the right decisions, if you waited too long or acted too soon
- Anger or frustration
- Physical symptoms — fatigue, headaches, a tight chest
- Loneliness — particularly if you live alone
All of these are normal. Grief is not linear, and healing is not about “getting over it.” It is about learning to carry your love forward.
Some people cry for weeks. Others feel numb. Some want to talk about their pet constantly, while others need quiet. Some grieve intensely for a short time, while others carry a gentle sadness for years. None of these is wrong. Honour your own process.

If your grief is affecting your ability to function in daily life — your work, your relationships, your health — please reach out for professional support. A GP can provide a Mental Health Care Plan that gives you access to subsidised sessions with a psychologist under Medicare.
Seeking professional support for pet loss grief is not a sign of weakness. Psychologists and counsellors who work with grief understand the unique bond between humans and animals. If you are struggling, ask your GP about a Mental Health Care Plan — Medicare subsidises up to 10 sessions per year with a psychologist.
