Why Pet Insurance Exists
The purpose of pet insurance and why Australian pet owners consider it.
The Reality of Veterinary Costs
Veterinary medicine in Australia has advanced enormously over the past two decades. Pets now have access to MRI scans, chemotherapy, orthopaedic surgery, and specialist referral hospitals that rival human facilities. The quality of care is extraordinary — but the costs reflect that.
A routine desexing surgery for a dog might cost $300–$600. A cruciate ligament repair can run $3,000–$6,000. Cancer treatment can exceed $10,000 over the course of several months. Emergency after-hours care for a snake bite or tick paralysis can easily reach $5,000–$15,000.
Unlike human healthcare in Australia, there is no Medicare for pets. Every dollar of veterinary treatment is paid out of pocket — unless you have pet insurance.
Pet insurance exists to help owners manage the financial risk of unexpected veterinary bills. It works on the same principle as any insurance: you pay a regular premium, and in return the insurer covers a portion of eligible veterinary costs when your pet needs treatment.

How Many Australians Insure Their Pets?
Australia’s pet insurance market has grown significantly, but uptake remains relatively low compared to countries like the UK and Sweden. Industry estimates suggest that fewer than 10% of Australian pets are insured, compared to roughly 25% in the UK and over 40% in Sweden.
This means the vast majority of Australian pet owners are fully exposed to the cost of unexpected veterinary treatment. For some, that is a conscious decision backed by savings. For many, it is simply something they have not considered until an emergency happens.
Understanding what pet insurance offers — and what it does not — is the first step toward deciding whether it makes sense for your situation.
